The causes of Glaucoma

In Canada, Glaucoma has been now become one of the leading causes of vision loss. The causes of glaucoma are not clear.


It may be occur due to non maintenance of eyes and overall health. Glaucoma has not specific signs and symptoms which can help us to determine it. Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve. Optic nerve plays a key role in sending the images and information which is taken through our retinas to our brain. Our eyes constantly produce the fluid to maintain liquidity inside the walls of eyes. If our eyes produce too fluid and it is not drained properly, it can put pressure on optic nerve. And it can cause vision loss.

The Types of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is divided many categories, but here are the most common categories.

  1. Open Angle Glaucoma: It is one of the most common types of Glaucoma. In this condition, eyes look normal but the water level of the eye does not keep it maintained properly through the drain of eyes, also known as trabecular mesh-work.
  2. Narrow Angle Glaucoma: Also known as acute and chronic angle closure glaucoma is less common than open angle glaucoma. It can cause poor drainage due to the narrow angle between the iris and cornea or physically blocked by iris. A sudden pressure in the eye can be caused through this condition.

Who gets glaucoma?

  1. Individuals over the age of 40 may get glaucoma.
  2. Individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure or with a history of Glaucoma in family may get glaucoma.
